Student Work Samples
This is from an in-class project where students created comic strips about various aspects on the beginning of Islam.
In this assignment students were asked to analyze various grievances addressed in the Declaration of Independence. Students discussed and wrote about the purpose of these grievances and whether they were meant to benefit the rich/powerful or everyone. Furthermore, the class discussed how their findings contributed to influencing colonists to fight for the patriots.
For this activity, the class worked together to rewrite lyrics to the popular song "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" This song was titled "Do You Want to Build an Empire?" The class wrote the first two stanzas as a class about the rise and prosperity of the Roman Empire. Students then had to complete the last stanza independently for homework or in class. In this last stanza students had to discuss the fall of Rome and one of their lasting contributions. For extra credit, students could compare Rome's fall to issues in the United States.
This assignment was a cumulative unit project on Islam and Africa. Students had to choose 8 important dates on the spread of Islam throughout the Middle East and into West Africa. In terms of format, students were encouraged to get creative, but they had to have 8 dates and explanations that explained why these dates were important in terms of the spread/growth of Islam. Students completed posters, videos, websites, PowerPoints, etc. Here are some samples:
